Cat and Dog Teeth Cleaning in Altadena, CA

Poor oral hygiene does not simply affect your pet's breath and the appearance of their teeth. Oral health is a major determining factor in your pet's overall well-being and can have a significant impact on their quality of life. Swollen gums and decaying teeth are very painful, and many adult cats and dogs have a tendency to develop dental problems. At Altadena Pet Hospital we always emphasize routine cat and dog teeth cleaning to our clients, because it can help their pets live longer.

What We Look For in a Dental Exam

We take a comprehensive approach to every patient's pet dental care program. This begins with a thorough exam during their wellness visit. During this time, we will check your pet's mouth for:

  • Abscesses
  • Bite problems
  • Jaw injuries
  • Gum disease
  • Fractured teeth
  • Damaged enamel
  • Plaque and calculus buildup

Our goal is to prevent any of these conditions from developing in the first place. However, if your veterinarian notices any of these issues, they will immediately offer suggestions for treatment.

The Cat and Dog Teeth Cleaning Procedure

Having your cat or dog's teeth cleaned regularly will prevent harmful bacteria buildup, along with the infections and damage that may result. A routine teeth cleaning on an otherwise healthy pet is known as prophylaxis. This removes any plaque or tartar that has accrued on the teeth and polishes tooth surfaces to prevent future buildup.

All of our dental patients must be placed under general anesthesia to maximize safety and minimize stress. Prior to any teeth cleaning, our team will run pre-anesthetic blood work and take digital radiographs to assess each patient's health. In addition, we monitor the following vitals during the procedure:

  • Blood pressure
  • CO2 levels
  • Heart rate
  • Oxygen
  • Temperature

Extractions are recommended for treating teeth that are fractured or infected. If we determine that your pet will need to have extractions, we will make sure they receive the appropriate antibiotics and analgesics (painkillers).

Furthermore, we use a safe heating system to maintain our patients' body temperatures and keep them comfortable.

Preventing Dental Problems: Cat and Dog Teeth Cleaning at Home

Gum disease is a painful inflammatory condition that can result in bleeding gums, tooth loss and infection. Along with our dental services, we recommend daily maintenance care at home. Brushing your cat or dog's teeth regularly will prevent plaque and tartar buildup, along with inflammation and infection.

Our veterinarian will help you decide what types of treatment will be most effective for your pet. Along with teeth cleanings, we can recommend a variety of pet dental care products to further supplement their care. If you ever have questions or concerns about your pet's oral health or any of their treatments, we would be glad to help.
